Thursday was Labour Day in Kenya, a national holiday. Therefore, many businesses and workplaces were closed for the day. But in order to complete an order due by the end of the week, we desperately needed just ONE zipper from one store in town, Freeman's. I called them the day before to be sure they will be open. They said they would be in store. BUT when I showed up on Thursday, the doors were locked and the shop was closed. I called them and they said they would open an hour later. Eventually they "opened" though I couldn't enter inside. They opened the doors, just a crack and I had to order the zipper outside and they brought it to me.
While I waited to sort out the zipper purchase, I decided to make an adventurous exploration. I found several new places I had never been to before. In that hour of waiting, I went inside the Nairobi City County City Market. It is a big step-triangular building.
Inside there are shop and shop of fresh meat being sold, followed by lines of produce sellers and in the center of the building, there is a huge two-story market where souvenirs and flowers are sold. I walked around both downstairs and upstairs with many vendors selling a great variety of items.
On the way back to Freeman's I spotted a coffee shop called Caffe Dully. I loved the atmosphere, simplicity, location and prices. I will definitely be going back there again sometime soon.
This little adventure was quite unexpected but so worth it.
What a great day to spend my Labour Day this year.
